Maintaining Tulum’s position as a premier destination in the Mexican Caribbean requires unified efforts across the public and private sectors, said David Ortiz Mena, president of the Mexican Caribbean Hotel Council, during his remarks at Mayor Diego Castañón Trejo’s first annual government report.

Ortiz Mena expressed support for the current municipal administration, particularly in key areas such as public safety, sargassum mitigation, and the operation of Jaguar National Park. He emphasized that improving the overall visitor experience is critical to preserving the local economy and ensuring long-term stability for families who depend on tourism.

One of the most pressing issues addressed was the impact of sargassum, which led to significant operational costs for hotels during a challenging summer season. The decline in tourist arrivals during this period, Ortiz Mena noted, makes a strong winter season essential to recover lost occupancy rates and revenue.

On the topic of security, Ortiz Mena acknowledged the municipal government's progress despite limited resources. Initiatives such as Blindaje Tulum, the launch of a new Executive Police Force, and the forthcoming Tourism Police Unit, set to debut in 2026, were cited as important steps toward stabilizing the destination amid a rising transient population.

The hotel sector leader also highlighted the broader challenges Tulum continues to face — including infrastructure gaps, environmental pressure, and the need for sustained public safety measures. Nonetheless, he reiterated that collaboration between government, business leaders, and the community will be vital to sustaining Tulum’s reputation and ensuring it remains a preferred destination for global travelers.

“Infrastructure, security, and environmental stewardship must go hand-in-hand with responsible tourism. The only way to protect our position in the global market is by building confidence through consistent, united efforts,” Ortiz Mena concluded.
