Caribbean Architecture Biennale 2025 to Spotlight Sustainable Design in Tulum

On November 21, 2025, Tulum will host the inaugural Caribbean International Architecture Biennale, an event expected to bring together architects, urbanists, scholars, and students from 17 countries. The announcement was made during a press conference led by Tulum Mayor Diego Castañón Trejo, who emphasized the significance of this event in diversifying the city’s cultural and tourism profile.

“We’re honored that Tulum was chosen as the host for such an important international gathering,” said Castañón. “Events like this strengthen our identity as a dynamic, multifaceted destination and create new channels to attract both national and international visitors. Our doors remain open to those looking to bring their ideas and events to Tulum.”

The Biennale will focus on four key themes:

• Sustainable architecture in the face of climate change
• Conservation and adaptive reuse of architectural heritage
• Innovative design for coastal and insular environments
• Integration of local culture in contemporary architectural projects

These topics aim to foster interdisciplinary dialogue and showcase regional talent while addressing global challenges. The event will also feature a project competition, encouraging participants to present work that engages with these themes in meaningful and creative ways.

Guadalupe Portilla Mánica, President of the College of Architects of Tulum, highlighted the Biennale’s role in promoting architectural innovation and sustainability. “It’s not just about design—it’s about designing responsibly, with sensitivity to our cultural and ecological context,” she said.

This event marks another step in Tulum’s evolution as a venue for high-level international events that go beyond tourism. By hosting academic and professional gatherings, the city continues to attract diverse audiences and solidify its position as a hub for innovation, thought leadership, and sustainable growth.

The municipal government, under Castañón’s leadership, reiterated its commitment to supporting public-private collaboration to facilitate events that expand Tulum’s reach and reinforce its long-term development strategy.
