Puerto Morelos Wants to Take Its Sargassum Barrier to Five Kilometres

There are 2,310 metres of anti-sargassum barrier in the water off Puerto Morelos, running from Punta Brava to Punta Petempich. The municipality is projecting an expansion to five kilometres. The interesting part is the arithmetic underneath that: the coastline is 19 kilometres long, and nobody is proposing to barrier all of it.

That is not a shortfall. It is how the containment actually works here, and Puerto Morelos has an advantage no amount of floating barrier can replicate.

The reef is doing most of the work

The Puerto Morelos reef sits a few hundred metres offshore, closer to the beach than almost anywhere else on this coast, and it is a national park. Its practical effect during sargassum season is mechanical rather than ecological: it interrupts what is coming in before the barriers have to.

The state's own framing of the strategy puts it plainly, that containment rests on maritime infrastructure and on the natural characteristics of the area, the reef barrier in front of the municipality's coast among them. The floating barriers are placed to cover what the reef does not.

What is deployed, and where

Quintana Roo currently has 9,450 metres of anti-sargassum barrier in the water in total, distributed across Puerto Morelos, Playa del Carmen, Tulum and Mahahual. Puerto Morelos carries close to three kilometres of that, which makes it one of the more heavily protected stretches in the state relative to its length.

Mayor Blanca Merari and Oscar Rebora, head of the state Environment Secretariat, have inspected the barrier in operation as part of the municipality's containment plan.

The season it is being tested against

Statewide, this has been a heavy year. Quintana Roo had collected close to 80,000 tonnes of sargassum by early July, and the forecast for the 2026 season as a whole was put above 92,000 tonnes. Those are state figures across every municipality and not Puerto Morelos numbers, but they set the scale of what the barriers are being asked to hold.

What this does and does not prove

It does not prove Puerto Morelos will have clear water. A barrier redirects and contains sargassum; it does not stop it arriving, and no municipality on this coast has claimed otherwise.

The five kilometre figure is also a projection rather than a funded, contracted commitment. It is what the municipality says it intends, and it should be read as intent.

What it does establish is that the defence here is being extended rather than maintained, in a year when the volume has been high, and that Puerto Morelos starts from a better natural position than most of the coast because of what is sitting offshore. For anyone judging beaches on this stretch, the reef is the thing to understand first and the barrier second.
