Tulum Boosts Anti-Sargassum Measures and Launches Festivals to Strengthen Local Economy

During his weekly press briefing “Tulum Comunica y Avanza”, Mayor Diego Castañón Trejo announced a dual-action strategy focused on environmental response and economic revitalization. The municipal government is intensifying sargassum cleanup efforts while launching a calendar of cultural events to support tourism and local commerce.
Over 850 Tons of Sargassum Collected in July
Mayor Castañón praised the coordinated efforts between municipal, state, and federal authorities to manage the seasonal influx of sargassum along Tulum’s beaches. Special recognition was given to ZOFEMAT Tulum staff, who begin early-morning operations to clear affected coastal areas.
According to Juan Antonio Garza, Director of ZOFEMAT, more than 850 tons of sargassum have been removed during July alone. With cleanup operations ongoing, officials expect to close the month with approximately 1,000 tons collected, surpassing last year’s figures for the same period.
To reinforce cleanup efforts, the municipality is launching a Temporary Employment Program next week, which will add more operational personnel to the beach brigades. The program will be supported by 70 members of the Mexican Navy, working alongside municipal crews in the hardest-hit zones.
Summer Festivals Aimed at Reviving Tourism and Local Commerce
As part of the economic recovery plan, Melitón González Pérez, Director of Economic Development, unveiled a series of upcoming festivals and fairs designed to stimulate local business and attract visitors throughout August:
- National Honey Day Fair – August 9
Celebrating the region’s apiculture with local honey products on display and for sale. - Lobster Festival in Punta Allen – August 15–17
A cultural and culinary event highlighting sustainable fishing, regional cuisine, and traditional activities. - Craft Beer Festival – August 30–31
A celebration of local brewing and gastronomy, aimed at boosting domestic tourism and community engagement.
These events are expected to generate renewed foot traffic for local businesses and reinforce Tulum’s image as a dynamic, culturally rich destination.
Weekly Accountability and Transparent Governance
In addition to updates on environmental and economic initiatives, the weekly conference included progress reports from departments such as Cadastre, Commerce, Public Safety, and Citizen Protection.
Mayor Castañón reaffirmed his commitment to transparency and public accountability, noting that future editions of the conference will feature members of the City Council and department heads to provide broader insights into municipal governance and planning.
With a strong push for sustainable development, public trust, and creative strategies to support its economy, Tulum continues to adapt and lead during a challenging season—offering a model of responsive and community-focused governance in the Mexican Caribbean.
