Tulum courts the wedding trade with a live showcase for more than 100 planners

On Friday, October 2, Tulum's tourism office backed a gathering billed for more than 100 wedding planners, suppliers and service providers built around two marriage proposals staged live and at the same time. It was a trade event, not a public one, and that is the point: Tulum is working the people who decide where weddings happen, and it is doing it one meeting at a time.
The event was called The Art of Destination Wedding: Love, Art & Architecture, and it was organized by the wedding designer Sofía García Cigala with the support of the municipal government. Announcing it in late September, García Cigala said the two simultaneous proposals were designed to show how Tulum's natural setting, art and architecture come together, and that the aim was to build commercial ties among organizers, suppliers and providers in the romance segment. "Tulum se consolida como un destino referente para el turismo de romance y las bodas de destino," she said, describing Tulum as consolidating itself as a reference destination for romance tourism and destination weddings. Haydee Hernández Pastrana, the municipality's director general of tourism, attended on behalf of Mayor Diego Castañón Trejo and was direct about the council's position: "Estamos apoyando en todo lo que se necesite a este evento, por indicaciones del presidente municipal," or, in English, the town is supporting the event in everything it needs, on the mayor's instructions.

A season of wedding diplomacy
The October showcase is the latest in a run of moves this year rather than a one-off. In February, the Tulum Destination Wedding Expo returned for a second edition after a three-year pause, running from February 11 to 13 across Romeo Tulum, Casa Malca and the Zamna venue, with a free public expo on the final day. In early September, Hernández Pastrana took the destination to the fifth Summit of Wedding Associations of the Mexican Caribbean in Cancún, where Tulum was presented to more than 200 wedding planners and businesses. "Estuvimos en el quinto Summit de Asociaciones de Bodas del Caribe Mexicano," she told La Jornada Maya, adding that the intention is to keep forming new alliances "con una misma visión," with a shared vision.

At that summit Tulum also signed on to something more formal. Public tourism offices from Tulum, Playa del Carmen and Cancún joined hotel and industry representatives in a voluntary public and private agreement to strengthen the romance segment along four lines: professionalization, promotion of the destinations, business linkage and innovation. On September 27 the town was due to appear at a further industry showcase, the Harrah's Poolside Wedding Experience, and Hernández Pastrana has said Tulum plans its own Tulum Wedding Week in 2027, with dates still to be announced.
Tulum has some recognition to work with. In 2025 it was named Mexico and Central America's Most Romantic Destination at the World Travel Awards, and the tourism director said this year that it is again among the nominees.
What this does and does not show
None of this is a count of weddings. The municipality has not published how many ceremonies Tulum hosts in a year, and we could not find a post-event report from October 2 giving attendance or deals signed, so the figure of more than 100 professionals is the number announced in advance. Wider claims about the segment, such as the expo organizers' statement in February that the Riviera Maya hosts around 70 percent of Mexico's weddings, come from the industry rather than from official statistics, and should be read that way.
What the record does show is a town choosing a particular kind of visitor to court. A wedding is planned months ahead, brings a group rather than a couple, and does not depend on a single flight route or a single season. That makes it a useful counterweight to the swings in leisure travel Tulum has lived through this year, and it explains why the tourism office is spending its time with planners rather than only with consumers. For owners of larger homes and villas, wedding weekends are one of the ways groups find their way to Tulum, which is worth knowing without overstating it.
