Starting June 26, 2024, Copa Airlines will become the first Latin American airline to operate flights to Tulum International Airport. This new route will offer four weekly flights, complementing Copa's existing operations at Cancun International Airport. The new service will allow tourists the flexibility to enter through Cancun and depart through Tulum, or vice versa. Plans are in place to increase flight frequencies over time, adding to the current seven daily flights to Cancun.
The central and southern parts of Quintana Roo, including Mahahual, Bacalar, and Chetumal, have unique attractions that differentiate them from destinations like Cancun. The new Copa flight to Tulum is expected to make these areas more accessible to tourists. The enhanced infrastructure at Tulum airport is a significant development for diversifying tourist arrivals from key Latin American countries such as Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Uruguay, Paraguay, and Colombia.
Mauro Arredondo, General Manager of Copa Airlines in Mexico, announced this during an event at a well-known hotel in Tulum, which included a workshop with Latin American wholesalers. The event highlighted the benefits of the new flight route for the southern Quintana Roo region and showcased what the Mexican Caribbean has to offer.
The flights will be operated using a Boeing 737-800, with an average capacity of 160 seats. These flights will land in Tulum around 10:00 AM and return to Panama a few hours later, facilitating convenient check-in and check-out times for hotel guests. Copa Airlines has already organized trips for two groups of Latin American wholesalers to Tulum, aiming to introduce them to the destination and the broader Mexican Caribbean region. This development is part of Copa's strategic expansion, which includes operations by its low-cost subsidiary Wingo to Tulum and Cancun.
