A notice at Santander's branch in Tulum says the office will close and that its operations and services will move to branch 0825, Playacar Riviera Maya, in Playa del Carmen. The bank has given no closing date and no reason, and has not said whether its Tulum ATMs will stay.

The notice was reported on October 26, 2026 by Sol Quintana Roo, Diario Cambio 22 and The Tulum Times, and on October 27 by Marcrix Noticias. It announces only that the closure is coming and where services will go. The branch manager declined to discuss the reasons, according to Diario Cambio 22, or to give any information about the closure, according to Marcrix Noticias, and The Tulum Times reported that, as of October 26, Santander México had posted no public statement about the Tulum branch.

What it means for customers

Playacar is in Playa del Carmen, in the neighboring municipality of Solidaridad, about 60 kilometers north of Tulum, or roughly an hour by car on Federal Highway 307, as The Tulum Times put it. As The Tulum Times points out, most everyday banking does not need a branch at all and runs through the app, online banking or a cash machine. The trips that will cost time are the ones that need a person behind a desk, where an original document has to be shown, a form signed on paper or an identity checked face to face.

For anyone who banks with Santander in Tulum, the practical step is to deal with any pending in-branch business while the Tulum office is still open, and to ask the branch directly which services, if any, will remain in town.

What is not yet known

Three things are missing from every report so far: the date the branch closes, whether the ATMs stay, and why the bank is leaving. Until Santander says otherwise, those should be treated as open questions rather than assumptions in either direction. This story will be updated when the bank publishes a date.
