While Tulum will not host official matches during the FIFA World Cup 2026, the town is positioning itself as a premier tourism gateway for international fans eager to combine world-class football with Caribbean relaxation, culture, and adventure.

According to Adolfo Héctor Tonatiuh Velasco Bernal, director general of Grupo Mundo Maya, which manages the Felipe Carrillo Puerto International Airport, Tulum’s new terminal will play a pivotal role in Mexico’s tourism strategy during the tournament.

“Tulum’s airport has all the conditions to become a key point of entry for fans looking to experience both the excitement of the World Cup and the beauty of the Mexican Caribbean,” said Velasco Bernal.

A Strategic Location with Global Appeal

With its modern infrastructure, growing list of international and domestic routes, and direct proximity to destinations like Cancún, Playa del Carmen, and the Riviera Maya, Tulum offers a unique value proposition for football travelers. Although match play will be concentrated in Mexico City, Guadalajara, and Monterrey—Mexico’s three official host cities—the expectation is that nearby leisure destinations will benefit from increased international arrivals before, during, and after the tournament.

Tulum’s rising status, supported by its boutique hospitality scene, eco-luxury appeal, and connectivity through the new airport and upcoming Maya Train, positions it as a compelling alternative for fans seeking rest, retreat, and cultural immersion alongside the excitement of the matches.

Ready to Receive the World

Velasco Bernal affirmed that the airport is fully prepared for high-volume, high-season traffic. “We are ready to offer a comfortable and efficient arrival experience, built to international standards,” he said. The facility already handles domestic and international flights, and will ramp up its logistical capacity ahead of the expected 2026 demand surge.

The development is part of a broader strategy to capitalize on Mexico’s co-hosting of the World Cup—an event anticipated to attract over 1 million international visitors to North America.

Tourism and Investment Opportunity

For tourism operators, investors, and local businesses, the 2026 World Cup presents a unique window of opportunity. Tulum’s role as a lifestyle destination—with a focus on sustainable luxury, nature-based experiences, and cultural authenticity—makes it an ideal base for fans looking to extend their travel beyond stadiums and into meaningful exploration.

With global eyes on Mexico in 2026, Tulum is ready to show the world not just a beach, but a brand—one that blends sophistication, connectivity, and Caribbean charm.
