Authorities and business leaders project a strong tourism rebound for the final months of 2025, with hotel occupancy expected to reach 80% in November and 90% in December, according to data shared during the weekly municipal press conference led by Mayor Diego Castañón Trejo. The session was attended by David Ortiz Mena, President of the Tulum Hotel Association, who presented the official booking numbers for the year-end season.

“Tulum is a unique and extraordinary destination that continues to represent an important tourism brand both nationally and internationally,” said Mayor Castañón Trejo. “Low seasons exist in every tourism hub, but we’re working closely with all levels of government to strengthen coordination and keep the destination moving forward.”

Seasonal Fluctuations and Recovery Outlook

Ortiz Mena noted that current hotel occupancy stands at 54%, consistent with October’s historic trend as one of the slowest months of the year. However, advance bookings for the upcoming winter season suggest a strong recovery, with December expected to surpass 90% as international travel demand rises.

While acknowledging a 10-point decline compared to the same period last year, Ortiz Mena attributed the slowdown to external factors, including domestic political uncertainty in the United States — Tulum’s top visitor market — and the unusually heavy sargassum arrivals seen throughout the summer. Despite these challenges, he emphasized that Tulum has demonstrated resilience through past downturns and is positioned for another solid high season.

Coordinated Action to Boost Tourism

Mayor Castañón announced that a working session is scheduled with federal and state tourism authorities, including Tourism Secretary Josefina Rodríguez Zamora, Governor Mara Lezama, and State Tourism Secretary Bernardo Cueto Riestra. The meeting will focus on developing strategies to incentivize tourism, improve visitor experience, and strengthen industry collaboration heading into 2026.

The press conference also featured participation from regional leaders such as Erick Borges Yam, Mayor of José María Morelos, and José Alfredo Contreras Méndez, Mayor of Bacalar, both of whom voiced their support for Tulum amid what they described as a recent wave of misinformation affecting the destination’s image.

“The coordination we’re achieving between municipalities and federal authorities is unprecedented,” said Contreras Méndez. “Thanks to Mayor Castañón’s outreach, we’re now part of national discussions that are generating tangible results for our communities.”

A Call for Unity and Sustainable Growth

Mayor Castañón concluded by reaffirming his administration’s commitment to unity across government, private sector, and civil society. “The future of Tulum depends on cooperation. When all sectors work together — from hoteliers to local producers — we ensure prosperity that benefits not only our visitors, but above all, our residents.”

With bookings climbing ahead of the winter season and renewed institutional coordination, Tulum continues to consolidate its position as one of Mexico’s most dynamic tourism destinations, balancing growth, sustainability, and opportunity for its local population.
