During this week’s edition of “Tulum Comunica y Avanza”, Mayor Diego Castañón Trejo outlined important developments across public safety, infrastructure, and environmental sustainability—demonstrating the administration’s ongoing commitment to improving quality of life for residents.

Enhanced Security Operations and Community Coordination

Edgar Aguilar Rico, Secretary of Public Security and Citizen Protection, reported 25 arrests for administrative offenses and three related to narcotics between July 28 and August 3. These operations reflect improved performance and morale among local police forces.

Efforts also included the recovery of 25 motorcycles, 14 of which were impounded for irregular documentation, and 19 abandoned vehicles, removed after official notices were issued.

To improve community safety, the police department continues to strengthen ties with neighborhoods like Guerra de Castas, and maintain real-time communication channels with the hotel sector through dedicated security chats. A joint operation with Playa del Carmen authorities is also being prepared to enhance inter-municipal vigilance.

28 Public Works Projects Underway Across Tulum

Christian Moguel, Director of Public Infrastructure, announced that 28 construction projects are currently active. Key initiatives include:

  • Full rehabilitation of the coastal promenade and Sagitario Street in Guerra de Castas.
  • Near completion (95%) of improvements along Trato Street.
  • Ongoing drainage, paving, and signage works in La Veleta, Tumben Kah, and Colonia Belén.
  • New electrification and public lighting projects in Francisco Uh May.
  • Construction of water absorption wells in the central zone.
  • The beginning of the first phase of Avenida Cobá development.

Of the 100.6 million pesos contracted, 78 million pesos have already been executed, in line with the Annual Operational Plan.

2025 Municipal Development Plan Highlights Federal Investment

Jesús Hernández Valencia, Director of Planning, presented a status update on the 2025 Municipal Development Plan, crafted through public consultations including input from indigenous communities. The plan was formally published on February 28.

The 2025 Annual Operational Program (POA) proposes 203.45 million pesos in investment, with nearly 95% funded by the federal government. Among the flagship projects are:

  • Equipping the C5 Command and Control Center
  • Reviving the long-abandoned Sendero Verde project
  • Key road paving efforts including Avenida Osiris and Calle Cupul
  • Expansion of health centers in Chanchen Palmar
  • Launch of Tulum’s new sports complex

Hernández emphasized the need for continued citizen engagement, noting that over 200 million pesos in additional projects are currently being reviewed for funding.

Environmental Response Strengthened as Sargassum Collection Surges

Juan Antonio Garza, Director of ZOFEMAT, reported that over 3,000 tons of sargassum were removed in July—surpassing last year’s collection during the same month. Although some beaches still show accumulation, cleanup efforts have been effective, thanks in part to the Navy’s vessels and installed sargassum barriers.

A new federal cleanup program is scheduled for August, aiming to sustain beach recovery. Garza called on the public to join in preservation and remediation efforts as the region continues to face seasonal challenges.
