Sian Ka'an translates from Maya as the gate of heaven, or the place where the sky begins. This is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a federally protected biosphere reserve, a corridor of white sand, mangrove, palm forest and shallow reef running south from Tulum along one of the last undeveloped coastlines in the Mexican Caribbean.
