Cancún opens the first span of its Kukulcán interchange, and a new bus now crosses the Nichupté bridge

Cancún opened the first elevated span of its new Kukulcán interchange at 6:00 a.m. on Sunday, November 1, 2026, for traffic leaving the hotel zone toward the airport, and on Monday, November 2, a new public bus route began running across the Nichupté bridge from the north of the city to kilometer 20 of the hotel zone. The bus is free until November 9; after that the fare is 18 pesos.

Both changes are pieces of the same project. The Nichupté bridge crosses the lagoon between downtown Cancún and the hotel zone, and the interchange is where it lands on Bulevar Kukulcán. In September, Mexico's infrastructure secretary said the interchange was 57 percent built and due in December, as we reported in our piece on the interchange's progress. Six weeks later, one direction of it is carrying traffic.
For drivers: what changed on Kukulcán
Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa opened the new elevated roadway on the Sunday morning. Drivers on Bulevar Kukulcán heading for Cancún International Airport can now use the elevated structure, while drivers heading for downtown Cancún must join the Nichupté bridge, according to the state government's bulletin. The opposite direction of the interchange is expected to open "in the coming weeks." The Kukulcán turnaround next to Hospital La Joya stays closed to general traffic, with access only for local traffic to the shopping plaza there; no reopening date was given. The state asked drivers to follow the signs and allow extra time.
The interchange is a federal work, built by the Secretaría de Infraestructura, Comunicaciones y Transportes (SICT). The governor described it as part of the works that complete the Nichupté bridge, and said it will organize traffic between downtown Cancún, the hotel zone and the airport.

For everyone else: the Villas del Mar 3 to Nichupté bus
The new MOBI route, Villas del Mar 3 to Puente Nichupté, runs 36 buses every 12 minutes, from 4:00 a.m. until roughly 2:15 a.m. the next day; the last bus leaves the Westin Regina hotel at 1:00 a.m. It starts and ends on Avenida Kabah at the OXXO Kanle in Villas del Mar 3, between Violetas and Los Tréboles streets. Outbound, it runs down Kabah, crosses the Nichupté bridge and follows Bulevar Kukulcán to the Punta Nizuc turnaround at kilometer 20. On the way back it runs up Kukulcán as far as Plaza Caracol before returning over the bridge. The full loop is 62.72 kilometers and takes 216 minutes.
Points of interest the state lists along the way include Plaza La Isla, the Museo Maya de Cancún and its archaeological zone, Playa Delfines and Plaza Caracol in the hotel zone, and Multiplaza Kabah, Sam's Club Kabah, the Tecnológico de Cancún and the Andrés Quintana Roo stadium on the city side. It says the route covers 86,287 people in 128 neighborhoods.
After the free week, the general fare to the hotel zone is 18 pesos. With the transfer scheme, a second ride within three hours of the first boarding costs 7.50 pesos and a third and fourth are free, provided every boarding is paid with the same MOBI electronic payment method. Bank debit and credit cards are accepted for the fare but do not earn the transfer discount. The free MOBI app, on the App Store and Google Play, creates a virtual card that must be topped up before travel and shows a QR code at the validator. Students and older adults with a MOBI social-fare card pay 10 pesos, then 5 pesos, with the third and fourth rides free.
What it does and does not fix
The new bus links the north of the city with the hotel zone as far as kilometer 20; the route as published does not include the airport, and its full loop takes more than three and a half hours, so it is a commuter and local route rather than a shuttle. On the road, only one direction of the interchange is open, and the turnaround at Hospital La Joya is closed with no reopening date. For anyone driving from the Riviera Maya to a hotel-zone dinner or a flight out of Cancún, the practical advice for November is simple: follow the new signs, and leave a little earlier than you used to.
